Pink Glove Dance Spreads Across the Nation: Sequel to YouTube Sensation Heightens Breast Cancer Awareness

4,000 Healthcare Workers and Survivors Dance in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness

MUNDELEIN, IL--(Marketwire - September 17, 2010) -  It started with healthcare workers at one hospital in Portland, Oregon dancing in pink gloves to bring hope and joy to those affected by breast cancer. Now the dance is spreading across the country. Pink Glove Dance: The Sequel features more than 4,000 healthcare workers and breast cancer survivors from San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to New York's Times Square and many sites in between. The original video, which was produced by Medline Industries, Inc. -- the makers of the pink gloves -- debuted last November and featured workers from Providence St. Vincent Medical Center wearing pink gloves and dancing in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. Today, the video has more than 11 million views on YouTube, eliciting tens of thousands of letters and e-mails and spawning an endless number of pink glove dance videos and breast cancer awareness events across the country. 

"The response to the original video we received from the healthcare community, survivors and family members of survivors was overwhelming and heartwarming," said Sue MacInnes, Medline's chief marketing officer. "We were flooded with calls, e-mails and letters about the joy the video was bringing, and people were asking if they could participate in a sequel. We thought if one video and one hospital could bring this much attention to the issue, think what a video could do with 20 times the people and facilities participating in it."

Medline went across the country and into Canada to film healthcare workers and breast cancer survivors dancing in pink gloves to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention.

"The video is such a morale booster for all of us throughout the hospital because it's such a great cause," said Linda Rumore, purchasing agent for Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and the coordinator of the shoot at the hospital. "It's like Christmas Eve here because everyone is so excited and honored to be involved in the video and can't wait to see it."

In addition to healthcare workers, the second video also features breast cancer survivors dancing at five different locations across the U.S.

"Last year at this time I was smack in the middle of chemotherapy. I was just newly diagnosed and somebody e-mailed me the original Pink Glove video," said Dee Morrow, a breast cancer survivor who participated in the Times Square shoot in New York City. "And when I watched that Pink Glove video I probably cried for like 15 minutes. But it gave me so much inspiration, so much joy. When I got the e-mail that said that I could actually be in the Pink Glove video sequel, I moved everything to be there."

Medline originally thought of pink gloves and the Pink Glove Dance video as a way to expand its breast cancer awareness message.

"Breast cancer awareness and prevention is now the largest philanthropic cause in our company," said Andy Mills, president of Medline. Medline donates $1 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every case sold of its pink gloves to help fund mammograms for underserved women.
