PIPSC Announces Position on Expedited Bargaining

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 20, 2010) - "The Board of Directors of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) will support any of its bargaining groups who opt to engage in exploratory discussions with their respective employers to quickly renew their collective agreements. This announcement is in response to Treasury Board President Stockwell Day's offer to engage in exploratory discussions with the objective of reaching early collective agreements.

"According to Institute policy, each of our Groups has the right to decide whether or not to participate in this expedited bargaining process," commented PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "Our Group representatives will be meeting in Ottawa next week to assess the impacts of this unusual bargaining option. If early agreements are reached, they will be put to a vote by the Group's members. We will closely scrutinize this expedited process to ensure that the rights of our members are not compromised. It is of utmost importance that these negotiations be meaningful and must recognize and respect the important work our professional members perform for the public good."

In the event these negotiations fail, the existing bargaining schedule will take place as planned.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents 59,000 professionals across Canada's public sector.
