PIPSC: Black Clouds Looming over Federal R&D

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 23, 2006) - "Minister Flaherty's economic and fiscal statement released earlier today sent shivers down the spines of thousands of federal scientists"comments Michele Demers, President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada.

The economic statement reveals that the Conservatives are threatening to turn over some government laboratories to universities. This flagrant lack of vision is further evidence that the Conservatives fail to recognize the uniquely important roles of government science, including protecting the health and safety of the Canadian public.

"Black clouds loom over Canada's federal research and development community," says Demers, "but the Institute will continue its fight to foster a better understanding of the importance of R &D within the federal government."

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is a national union representing 50,000 professionals including more than 15,000 scientists.
