PIPSC-CAPE: Notice of Press Conference

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 1, 2008) - Michele Demers, President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) and Jose Aggrey, President of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) will hold a press conference to announce the launch in the Ontario Superior Court of a legal challenge to the constitutionality of federal legislation restricting the ability of its members, and all other unionized federal employees, to bargain a wide range of critical workplace issues.

Accompanying Mr. Aggrey and Ms. Demers at the press conference will be Steven Barrett of Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP, constitutional and labour counsel who represented the Canadian Labour Congress in the landmark B.C. Health Services litigation.

CAPE is the third largest federal government bargaining agent, representing over 11,000 professional employees in the federal government. CAPE represents economists, statisticians, sociologists, translators, interpreters and terminologists.

PIPSC is a national union representing 55,000 public sector professionals across Canada, of whom more than 40,000 work directly in the federal public service. PIPSC represents IT professionals, scientists, engineers, architects, auditors, doctors, nurses, and others, employed by the federal and some provincial governments.
