Pirates, Penguins and Planet Earth Lead the Way in's Biggest Ever Christmas

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 26, 2006) - received 3/4 million orders on its busiest day this Christmas - a rate of almost nine orders per second - as the UK online retailer enjoyed its biggest Christmas ever. Christmas 2006 highlights:

- On its busiest day, shipped over 600,000 units in one day - that represents 320 tonnes of goods - a company record

- That meant that a delivery truck was leaving's distribution centres every 8.5 minutes

"Internet retailing has taken another huge step forward this Christmas," said Brian McBride, Managing Director of Ltd. "Online businesses like are creating new levels of competition in retail and the customer is benefiting in terms of lower prices, greater selection and increased convenience." top selling Christmas 2006 products:

- 'Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest' was the number one DVD and top selling product overall

- Two surprise bestsellers - 'Planet Earth - 5 Disc Box Set' and 'High School Musical' took the second and third spots in DVD respectively and were third and fifth in the overall bestsellers list

- 'Why Don't Penguins feet freeze? And 114 other questions' was the number one book and second highest selling product overall

- 'Now That's What I Call Music 65' narrowly held off 'Beautiful World' by Take That to be the top selling Christmas CD

- In Consumer Electronics, the 'Kingston Technology 1GB Data Traveller USB Flash Pen Drive' sold more than the 30 GB Apple Ipod to take the number one spot

- Dr Who dominated the Toys chart with four appearances in the top ten

"There have been some intriguing patterns in this year's Christmas buying habits," said Brian McBride. "The influence of TV remains strong over a number of categories with Planet Earth, Dr Who and Deal or No Deal, all big Christmas winners."

"The general resurgence of bands is illustrated by the fact that no solo artists appear in the Top Ten selling CD's for the weeks leading up to Christmas. Congratulations to Take That who outsold The Scissor Sisters, Oasis and The Beatles to cap an incredible comeback year for them."

"The books chart is perhaps the most interesting," continued Brian McBride. "With the vast number of celebrity biographies and autobiographies released this Christmas expected to dominate the chart, it is interesting that only Peter Kay appears in the top five - unable to stop 'Why Don't Penguins Feet Freeze', 'QI' and the evergreen 'Dangerous Book for Boys' from taking the festive top spots."

The number one book in the Amazon Hot 100 chart on Christmas Day itself was "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" - the seventh and final book in the spell-binding series. It claimed the number one spot just hours after customers were offered the opportunity to reserve a copy with the online retailer on Friday 22nd December.

While the price and publication date have not yet been announced, all reservations on will be protected by a pre-order price guarantee, ensuring customers are charged the lowest price offered by during the pre-order period.

Following the success of Christmas, has now unveiled it's "Winter Blowout' promotion, offering massive savings on thousands of products.
