Pittsburgh-Based RE2, Inc. Recognized for Exceptional Innovation

Tibbetts Awards Honor Projects That Bring Federal R&D From the Lab to the Market

PITTSBURGH, PA--(Marketwire - February 15, 2011) - RE2, Inc. today announced that it has received a Tibbetts Award from the Small Business Administration (SBA) for its advanced, intelligent robotic arms and end-effectors for unmanned ground vehicles. SBA presents the awards to companies and individuals that have advanced technological innovation and economic growth.

"This award represents the culmination of an effort we began five years ago when we submitted our first Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) proposal," said Jorgen Pedersen, president and CEO of RE2. "We won our first grant in 2006 and have since made the SBIR Program a cornerstone of our business development."

RE2's Tibbetts Award recognizes the company's work meeting the Department of Defense's demand for improved modular manipulation technologies for robotic vehicles, particularly for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operations. RE2's robotic manipulator arm technologies have been integrated onto several leading robotic systems for both military and domestic bomb squad use.

"Before participating in the SBIR Program we served as a subcontractor to Carnegie Mellon University and worked on a variety of robotics engineering and unmanned systems programs," continued Pedersen. "Today, thanks to our SBIR success, we have focused on intelligent, mobile manipulators as our core competency, have expanded our staff to 45, and have more than quadrupled our revenue."

Pedersen and Doug Peters, vice president of operations, accepted the award at a ceremony this morning in Washington, DC. Afterward, they met with SBA Administrator, Karen Mills, and attended a reception at the White House.

"This is a proud day not only for RE2 but also for the city of Pittsburgh," said Sean Greene, SBA's Associate Administrator for Investment and Senior Adviser for Innovation. "Companies like RE2 represent the best in American ingenuity."
