Place a Bin Recycling Program Launched in Alberta

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 27, 2011) - Albertans are being empowered to help keep empty beverage containers out of provincial landfills, by having their say in where new recycling bins should be placed. Through the Place a Bin program, being launched today, Albertans can request to have recycling bins placed where they feel they're needed most.

The Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) is investing heavily to add thousands more new recycling bins across the province, in cooperation with the network of 218 Bottle Depots.

Guy West, ABCRC's President, says he expects the Place a Bin Program will help address the single largest barrier to out-of-home beverage container recycling. "Year-over-year Albertans reveal to us that the largest challenge to increased out-of-home recycling continues to be a lack of convenience. With this investment of additional bins across the province, we will be making it much easier and more convenient for Albertans to recycle their empty beverage containers, particularly when not at home."

Albertans are already enthusiastic beverage container recyclers – achieving a record 84 percent recycling rate for the year ending 2010, and well on their way to achieving the Alberta Government's 85 percent target set for the end of 2011. In recent years, the recycling rate has dramatically improved – it was just 76.8 percent in 2008.

Through the support of ABCRC's Community Champion Program (, bins will be serviced by not-for-profit partners, thus expanding their own bin infrastructure footprint. In return these partners will keep all revenues tied to the empty beverage containers yielded from servicing the new bins.

Albertans are invited to the website to place their bin using Facebook. The Place a Bin campaign runs through Alberta's busiest recycling season, the summer, and includes media support of transit advertising, radio advertising, geo-targeted online ads and guerrilla tactics including QR (quick response) mobile technology.

ABCRC is provincially incorporated and operates with not-for-profit provisions. With a mandate to be the agent of the beverage manufacturers to operate as the collection system agent for the common collection system for registered non-refillable containers, ABCRC is responsible for ensuring the recycling of non-refillable containers, and for promoting the effective, economic and efficient recovery of beverage containers across Alberta.
