SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwired - Dec 11, 2013) - Plandaí Biotechnology, Inc. (OTCQB: PLPL), a producer of highly bioavailable plant extracts for industries including health, wellness, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical, today announced that over the past several months the company has filed for multiple patents and trademarks as it seeks to protect its intellectual property.
Among the trademarks filed is one covering "Phytofare" for usage in the United States, Canada, and eight other countries. The company also filed a patent titled "System And Method Of Bioavailability Enhancement Of Plant Phytonutrients" and a provisional patent titled "Plant-Based Catechin Compositions." Provisional patents are filed in anticipation of a formal patent application within twelve months and are used to establish the order or precedence in the event a future patent is challenged. Both patents are intended to solidify Plandaí's intellectual property rights with respect to the process by which it creates its plant-based botanical extracts.
As previously discussed, Plandaí uses a proprietary method of extracting phytochemicals from plants. The system, called "hydrodynamic sheering," uses a combination of heat, pressure and hydro-cavitation to unzip living plant molecules and active antioxidants. These released molecules are then reduced into mainly nano-particle size where the antioxidant isomers are realigned making them more compatible with human tissues. The first product which will come to market using this unique process is Phytofare™ Catechin Complex, which is derived from and includes the entire array of catechins found in Green Tea.
Roger Duffield, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Plandaí Biotechnology, commented, "As we draw nearer to commencing production and sales of our Phytofare™ products, we want to make sure that our intellectual property is adequately protected. We anticipate filing additional patents covering our other products in the coming months as well as filing for additional trademark protection. For company that is heavily involved in research, this is a critical element of our operations."
The issuance of patents and trademarks can take several months as the various patent offices must determine if there are any competing claims and if the application meets the standards established for granting protection.
