MATANE, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Dec. 21, 2016) - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

The Government of Canada is committed to investing in job creation in order to stimulate economic growth and increase prosperity for Canadians. It is aware that communities must diversify strategically by focusing on innovation in order to develop lasting regional competitive advantages. As such, support for communities' transition and diversification is a priority for the Government of Canada.

Rémi Massé, MP for Avignon-La Mitis-Matane-Matapédia, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) and Minister responsible for CED, announced that the town of Matane was awarded $52,500 in financial support, in the form of a non-repayable contribution, for implementing the economic diversification strategy of the RCM of La Matanie.

The financial assistance, awarded under CED's Quebec Economic Development Program (QEDP), will enable the organization to hire a consultant who will prepare what will become a guiding light for the region's economic development.

The project aims to prepare a profile and diagnosis of the current socio-economic situation, to identify action priorities, strategic directions and development possibilities and, lastly, to develop a diversification strategy plus an action plan.

Quotes

"Preparation of this strategy is good news for the region. I am confident that it will be able to identify niches and courses of action that will foster the creation of new projects and strengthen the operations of existing businesses. Ultimately, this mobilizing project for the entire region will help create jobs and keep the young people here with us."

Rémi Massé, MP for Avignon-La Mitis-Matane-Matapédia

"CED helps Quebec's regions and companies participate in today's economy to the full extent of their potential and assets. The Town of Matane's project is a telling example of the support that can be provided to regions that get mobilized for renewing how they approach their economic development and grasp the multiple opportunities available to them."

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister responsible for CED

"The development of this strategy is crucial and decisive for the economic future of our region. This process will facilitate collaborative planning for our interventions: each partner will therefore have a specific role to play in achieving our shared objectives. We also hope to channel our efforts and act in line with the work already undertaken locally."

Jérôme Landry, Mayor of Matane

CED is one of the six regional development agencies under the responsibility of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
