Plastic Surgeon in Columbus Discusses Tools for Selecting the Proper Breast Implants

Dr. Michael J. Miller Reveals How He and His Colleagues at the Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery Help Patients Choose the Most Effective Implant Type, Shape, and Size for Their Individual Goals

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Jun 2, 2015) - According to statistics recently released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation was the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed last year, marking the third time in the last four years it has held this ranking. One of the main reasons breast augmentation remains among the most highly requested aesthetic surgeries year after year is the procedure's excellent rate of patient satisfaction, states Columbus plastic surgeon Michael J. Miller, MD. Achieving this high level of contentment, he continues, begins with the implant selection process.

At the Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Miller and his colleagues utilize a number of techniques to help women choose the right breast implants for their unique needs and goals. One such method is the employment of a state-of-the-art system known as VECTRA® 3D imaging. With this tool, the Columbus plastic surgeon says a digital picture of the patient is taken and uploaded onto an in-office monitor for convenient viewing. Once displayed, the image can be then modified based on the different types, sizes, and shapes of implants the individual is considering. While VECTRA® 3D imaging cannot simulate results with one hundred percent accuracy, notes Dr. Miller, it can help the patient establish realistic expectations and attain a better idea of how she may look with particular implant options following breast augmentation surgery.

Beyond computer imaging, Dr. Miller says before-and-after photographs of previous breast augmentation patients with comparable body types and goals can be viewed to further create a clear understanding of results that can realistically be achieved. Additionally, he states that a comprehensive evaluation of breast measurements, skin elasticity, nipple positioning, and several other factors are often performed to determine if the desired implants can be placed both safely and effectively.

Ultimately, Dr. Miller notes that breast implants of the exact same shape, size, and composition may not produce identical results for everyone, regardless of how similar patients may be in stature. For this reason, he adds that being able to view potential outcomes on one's own body via VECTRA® three dimensional imaging can be invaluable to choosing the most effective implants for one's individual needs and desires.
