For example, he explains that individuals who have a sufficient amount of breast skin and tissue may be able to achieve exceptional results when implants are placed above the pectoral muscle, while those who do not have an adequate amount of breast tissue may benefit more from a submuscular placement. Each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, he says, which is why patients should seek a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss the best option for their particular case.

Concerning implant longevity, Dr. Kurkjian states that a specific timeframe for the lifespan of breast implants cannot be provided since there is no way to guarantee an implant will last a certain number of years before a complication occurs and/or it needs to be exchanged. "Therefore," he writes in another recent blog post, "it's important for breast augmentation patients to be able to recognize the right time to exchange and/or upgrade their implants, as well as know how to be proactive about doing so." This includes identifying subtle changes -- such as leaking and/or rippling -- that may present over time, and seeking the expertise of a board-certified plastic surgeon should any abnormalities arise.
