Plastic Surgeon in Virginia Details Benefits and Limitations of Liposuction

Dr. Enrique A. Silberblatt of Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia Highlights the Various Advantages and Limitations of Removing Diet and Exercise-Resistant Fat With Liposuction

ROANOKE, VA--(Marketwired - Jul 14, 2015) - Regardless of how healthy their diet or how rigorous their exercise routine, many individuals experience the buildup of fatty tissue in particular areas of the body that proves resistant to change, states Roanoke plastic surgeon Enrique A. Silberblatt, MD, FACS. For men and women seeking to reduce these stubborn fat accumulations, he notes that liposuction can often be an exceptional surgical option.

At Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia, Dr. Silberblatt says this popular body contouring procedure is most commonly employed to diminish -- or even eliminate -- localized fat pockets in the flanks, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and knees. In addition, he continues, it can sometimes be utilized to target fat in the neck, chest, arms, and calves. Apart from the removal of diet and exercise resistant fat tissues, the Virginia plastic surgeon explains that supplementary benefits of liposuction can also include:

  • Enhanced definition in the treatment area
  • A more toned, fit appearance
  • A fairly minimal period of recovery and downtime
  • Long-lasting, often permanent outcomes

In regard to what patients can expect after liposuction, Dr. Silberblatt states that some swelling and firmness may occur in the targeted region, though these side effects should be temporary and often resolve over time. A special compression garment will need to be worn without removal for five days following the procedure, he says, after which time it is replaced with a new garment that can be taken off to bathe and/or shower. "With a good balance of rest and light movement throughout the initial stages of healing, most people are able to return to non-strenuous jobs and/or school after approximately one week; however, heavy lifting and more strenuous activities should be avoided for longer."

Ultimately, Dr. Silberblatt stresses that liposuction should not be considered a weight loss procedure; appropriate candidates are generally at or very near their desired body weight. Although fat cells removed during surgery do not regenerate, he explains that remaining cells in the targeted region can still accumulate fat. For this reason, he emphasizes the importance of eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and making healthy lifestyle choices in order to maintain optimal long-term results.
