Plus1 Analytics Seizes Top Spot at Las Vegas Startup Weekend

The Rob Roy inNEVation Center Hosts and Sponsors Las Vegas Entrepreneurs

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - August 14, 2013) -  More than 16 teams vied for the top spot at Las Vegas Startup Weekend August 9-11 at The Rob Roy inNEVation Center. Teams presented top ideas for a marathon weekend of modeling, coding, designing, analyzing and ultimately pitching a big idea to launch a company. Plus1 Analytics won top honors with the team's application designed to better assist casino staff track high rollers and VIPs in real time, improving efficiencies and customer service while minimizing uninformed risk to the casinos.

"Las Vegas is building as a technology mecca," said Steve Case, co-founder of America Online, chairman of investment firm Revolution and Las Vegas Startup Weekend judge. "This bodes well for the future of Vegas."

Other judges included Jason Mendenhall, executive vice president of cloud at Switch's SUPERNAP, and Will Young, director of Zappos Labs and partner at VegasTechFund. The first place team will receive coworking space for six months at The inNEVation Center, donated by Switch. The Plus1 Analytics team plans on moving in to the center immediately.

The winning team was started by Stephen Singer and Patrick Nichols, who were joined by developers Michael Blauser, Zach Kollegger and William Franceshine during the team-forming portion of the event. They plan to continue working as a team to fully develop the product and build a company. The teams were judged on three fronts: business model validation, product execution and user experience design.

"We gained a lot from this 54-hour experience, and from the exposure to talented peers and judges," said Nichols. "Las Vegas Startup Weekend has given us an opportunity to pitch our idea and has provided a platform to test our wings and launch a company."

Other companies to take home honors included second-place winner TxtileCO, and third-place winner, Band Aid. TxtileCO also won the award for best design.

"With every Startup Weekend, we see the sophistication level of the participants rise to new heights," said Jason Mendenhall, executive vice president of cloud at Switch and Startup Weekend judge. "This shift is very exciting to us as it is our core mission at The inNEVation Center to support innovative tech companies rising up in or moving into Las Vegas."

The winner of last year's Las Vegas Startup Weekend, LaunchKey, successfully garnered support and funding following the event. The company recently launched its public beta on July 1.

Rob Roy started working on the idea of The inNEVation Center after his appointment to the board of the Governor's Office of Economic Development. He decided that this vehicle for supporting and diversifying the economy of Nevada would be Switch's core philanthropic foundation.

Rob Roy's first brainchild, Switch, the developer of the multi-billion dollar SUPERNAPS, is the most successful homegrown technology startup in Nevada. The SUPERNAPS are the largest, best-designed technology ecosystems in the world. The ecosystems offer colocation, connectivity, cloud and content. The inNEVation Center is his way of paying it forward.

The next Las Vegas Startup Weekend event will take place in April 2014.
