PLX Experts Highlight Microserver Fabrics, Storage Solutions at Open Server Summit

Sessions' Topics: Microserver Connectivity; PCI Express Eclipsing SAS, SATA in Storage

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 14, 2013) - PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the global leader in PCI Express® (PCIe®) silicon and software connectivity enabling emerging data center architectures, today announced that Larry Chisvin, PLX® vice president of strategic initiatives, will lead a panel of industry experts addressing microservers, and Akber Kazmi, PLX senior marketing director, will present on PCIe's penetration in and disruption of the storage market, at the upcoming Open Server Summit. Chisvin will chair the session titled How Do We Connect the Microservers?, with a panel comprised of industry experts, on Wednesday, October 23, 10:00-11:00 a.m., and Kazmi's presentation, PCI Express Supersedes SAS and SATA in Storage (within the conference's NVMe: Bringing PCIe Speed to SSDs session) takes place October 23, 8:30 - 9:45 a.m. -- both at the Santa Convention Center, Santa Clara, Calif.

The session Chisvin chairs will explain and compare the different fabrics that can be used to connect microservers, addressing them in terms of performance, cost, flexibility, ecosystem, and familiarity. The panel -- featuring presentations from leading technology companies Calxeda, Fastor Systems, IDT, Magma, and Mellanox -- will help attendees understand the trade-offs among those fabrics that can be made for various applications.

Kazmi's presentation will highlight PCIe's rapid penetration in data-center and cloud storage environments currently the domain of the SAS and SATA storage interfaces. The NVMe session he presents at, focusing on the powerful combination of PCIe and solid-state drive (SSD) technologies, also will include presentations from Intel and SanDisk.

"Microservers and NVMe are both technologies in their early deployment cycles, but offer tremendous opportunities for system developers and their customers," said Chisvin. "The promise of significant cost and power reduction has caught the interest of CPU makers, software developers, and system manufacturers who are deploying highly dense microservers in their cloud environments and data centers. Likewise, storage professionals are already benefiting from the unprecedented performance capabilities of SSD storage, with NVMe providing a standard way to optimize the technology through PCI Express. The panel I'll be chairing and the session Akber will present at will provide the audience with a broad understanding of these two major shifts in computing and storage."

PLX was the first to market in 2004 with PCIe Gen1 switches and has continued to invest in and command the market, resulting in today's portfolio of feature-rich, low-latency, power-efficient switching devices that are complemented by PLX software, which enables quick time to market. The company began sampling the industry's first PCIe Gen3 switching silicon in 2010 and now offers designers worldwide 18 Gen3 switches ranging from 12 to 96 lanes, and three to 24 ports.

PLX continues to gain market share and now commands more than 70 percent of the worldwide market for PCIe switches. With its leading position in Gen3, the company expects this momentum to continue. The company has many more Gen3 switches in development to enable its ExpressFabric® initiative, a rapidly growing enterprise storage market, and other key data center applications, while in parallel is planning for PCIe Gen4 products.

The Open Server Summit focuses principally on the server community -- designers, developers and marketers. It emphasizes making servers designed for data centers and cloud environments energy-efficient and maximized for performance. To register, go to
