PLX, Tehuti Networks Join to Deliver New Class of 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Cards

Low-Power, Cost-Optimized, High-Performance MACs Paired With 10GBase-T

SUNNYVALE, CA and HERZELIA, ISRAEL--(Marketwire - Jun 11, 2012) - PLX Technology, Inc. (PLX) (NASDAQ: PLXT), a leading global supplier of high-speed connectivity solutions enabling emerging data center architectures, and Tehuti Networks, a fabless semiconductor company focused on mass adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, today announced a collaboration to deliver a superior network interface card (NIC) reference design platform utilizing 10GBase-T connectivity to enable bandwidth-intensive desktop workstation applications and low- to mid-range network appliances.

The reference design NIC hosts the new Tehuti TN4010 controller, an optimized 10 Gigabit Ethernet MAC designed for low-power, low-cost, single-port applications required in application servers, high-end workstations and personal computers. The TN4010 MAC is paired with the PLX® TeraPHY® TN8020 transceiver -- a single-port, low-power, high-performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHY -- to enable tri-speed connectivity (10GBase-T, 1000Base-T, and 100Base-TX) over low-cost standard category 6A Ethernet cabling. This combination creates a new gateway to cost-conscious consumer applications, as well as to intensive data environments.

"Industry analysts and OEMs are in consensus that the major requirements that will accelerate wide adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet are low power, and low cost," said Moshe Shahaf, chairman and CEO, Tehuti. "These necessities have now been met with the combination of PLX transceivers and Tehuti's TN4010 controller-based reference design."

"The combination of the Tehuti TN4010 MAC with PLX's TN8020 10GBase-T transceiver provides application servers, workstations and high-end personal computers with a capability heretofore unavailable -- a low-power, low-cost 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection," said Ron Cates, vice president of marketing, networking products at PLX. "This capability allows users to enhance connectivity data rates for immediate critical applications such as those involving video transport and data storage mirroring, or to future-proof hardware in anticipation of the widespread adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet. 10GBase-T is the only 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity option that is backward-compatible with existing, slower-data-rate Ethernet standards and which can auto-negotiate to reach acceptable transfer rates with link partners."

10 Gigabit Ethernet is targeted to replace the ubiquitous 1 Gigabit Ethernet standard. Data centers are being enabled with this higher-speed connectivity via PLX's 10GBase-T technology due to its 10-fold performance increase, as well as its seamless use of low-cost standard copper Ethernet cabling, unique security features and energy efficiency. 10GBase-T PHYs are fundamental building blocks of common data center hardware, including Ethernet switches, network interface cards and network adapters. PLX innovation enabled the industry's first 10GBase-T equipment, and its industry-leading 10GBase-T PHY portfolio is designed into numerous platforms. Increasingly power-efficient and feature-rich PLX PHYs designed on a 28-nanometer node are now in development.
