Plymouth Rock Assurance Emphasizes Hurricane Preparedness Measures as Hurricane Irene Nears New England

As Forecasters Warn of Hurricane Irene's Impending Approach, the Region's Top Auto Insurance Carrier Unveils Its Hurricane Preparedness Resource Center

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Aug 26, 2011) - Plymouth Rock Assurance, the flagship automobile insurance carrier of The Plymouth Rock group of companies which together write and manage over $1 billion in auto and homeowner's insurance throughout the Northeast, today emphasized the hurricane preparedness measures and recommendations it has created for customers, agents and businesses in the region. The recommendations come as Hurricane Irene, a Category 2 storm expected to make landfall in New England by the weekend, threatens the region with winds of up to 100 mph and what could be up to one foot of rain in some areas of New England.

With severe weather incidences increasing in recent years, residents of Massachusetts, Connecticut and other New England states are bracing for another storm. Plymouth Rock Assurance has partnered with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety to provide real-world safety recommendations for families and businesses.

Plymouth Rock and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety have laid out the following recommendations and urge all New England individuals and businesses to follow them.

  • Create a family emergency plan to ensure that every family member knows how to contact one another. This is critical in the event that family members become separated during a storm. The plan should include a pre-planned emergency meeting area; a directory of cell phone numbers for everyone in the family; and a clear evacuation strategy.
  • Build an emergency supply kit. The kit should include at least a three-day supply of fresh water and non-perishable food; one change of clothing per person; one blanket or sleeping bag per person; a first aid kit; flashlights; batteries; emergency tools; and cash.
  • Safeguard your automobile. Park your car in a secure location away from trees (in a covered garage if you have that option). Protecting your car is critical. Not only is it a valuable asset, but you may need it should evacuation become necessary or advisable.
  • If you are unable to park inside, do not park your car in a low-lying or flood-prone area, and securely fasten a tarp over your car to protect it from wind-blown debris.
  • Carefully review safety and preparedness material available online through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Hurricane Center, the American Red Cross and the National Weather Service.

The complete list of tips can be immediately downloaded from Plymouth Rock Assurance's blog. Moreover, Plymouth Rock Assurance has created an online severe weather resource center that is available for anyone who may need information on how to weather severe storms; to stay abreast of storms as they develop and are monitored by government agencies; and to hear expert testimony from severe weather experts at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. The resource center is currently live and being regularly updated.

If any Plymouth Rock Assurance customers need to report a claim as a result of damage from Hurricane Irene they may do so 24 hours a day by calling 888-324-1620. We assure that we will be there when our customers need us most.

"The pending arrival of Hurricane Irene is a stark reminder that we all need to take appropriate measures to safeguard our families and our businesses as we enter the late summer and early fall storm season," said Keith Jensen, Chief Marketing Officer, Plymouth Rock Assurance. "We've developed these recommendations to empower citizens and businesses to prepare for the worst while always hoping for the best."
