Polo Park Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Aug. 17, 2009) - Polo Park Shopping Centre -

Attention: City Editor or General Assignment Editor

It was a blustery morning on August 20, 1959 when The Honourable Duff Roblin, Premier of Manitoba, and Mayor Stephen Juba cut the ceremonial ribbon and declared Polo Park Shopping Centre officially open. 50 years later, a Centre Court celebration at 10:00 am on August 20, 2009 will mark the start of Polo Park's second half-century.

Sharing this significant milestone with the shopping centre are eight of the centre's original retailers: Sears Canada (founding partner), Broadway Florists, Fashionette Hair Stylists, Mario's Beauty Salon, Perth's, Polo Park Bowling Centre, Tip Top Tailors, and Zellers.

"As we embark on our next 50 years, we are honoured to be sharing the celebration with a special group of entrepreneurs and employees who have helped make Polo Park the exciting shopping destination it is today," said Deborah Green, General Manager. "Eight stores, including three that are still owned and operated by the original families, will be joining us on the stage. We will also be acknowledging the contributions of 97 men and women who have worked in Polo Park for over 20 years."

The first week of the "in fashion for 50 years" celebration will also include: an archival display of Polo Park's first 50 years through August 28th; Live Mannequin Modelling on August 22nd; and a special nod to the family-focus of the centre's grand opening with an August 29th show starring Winnipeg's iconic family entertainer - Al Simmons.

The celebration will continue through until August 19, 2010 as the shopping centre assembles a Time Capsule to record life, and lifestyles, in its 50th year. Over the next 12 months, Polo Park will be inviting the public to participate in a series of submissions that will cover the centre's past, present and future. The first call, commencing August 20th, is for favourite memories of Polo Park. Submissions can be emailed to polcares@cadillacfairview.com. All submissions will become the property of Polo Park, and as such, may also appear in 50th Anniversary presentations in the mall or on polopark.ca.
