Polycom Unites Telepresence and Desktop Video for Enterprise-Wide Visual Communication

Polycom Unveils First Visual Communication Solution That Unites Telepresence and Desktop Video With Presence-Based Dialing, Unrivaled Quality and Feature Support, and Centralized Provisioning and Management

PLEASANTON, CA--(Marketwire - October 20, 2008) - Polycom, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), the global leader in telepresence, video and voice communications solutions, today announced the first presence-enabled solution for enterprise-wide visual communication that unites telepresence and highly scalable desktop video collaboration within a common converged management platform. Through integration of Polycom telepresence solutions, the Polycom Converged Management Application™ (CMA™) and CMA Desktop™, a highly scalable desktop video application, Polycom provides customers with an unrivaled range of visual communication solutions that work together seamlessly to meet different application, space and budget requirements from the desktop to the boardroom.

"In this challenging economic environment, customers are embracing visual communication for its ability to reduce operating costs, improve productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of workers, and actually expand what is possible for their businesses," said Joe Sigrist, senior vice president and general manager of video solutions at Polycom. "By addressing ease-of-use and management issues that often limited adoption and use of traditional video conferencing, Polycom is delivering telepresence within a broader visual communication solution and architecture. The true power of visual communication as a transformative business tool is realized when it is pervasive throughout an organization, not just in board rooms and executive offices."

New Polycom HDX 2.5 software announced today supports integration between Polycom telepresence solutions and Polycom CMA, a comprehensive video network management solution that vastly simplifies a customer's ability to securely deploy, provision and manage extensive visual communication across their organization. A key component of the Polycom CMA solution is CMA Desktop, a tightly integrated enterprise desktop video application for PCs capable of supporting high definition (HD) video, voice and content while scaling to thousands of users across an organization. The Polycom CMA Desktop application is based on open standards and works seamlessly with Polycom's standards-based telepresence and video conferencing solutions.

The integration allows Polycom telepresence solutions and CMA Desktop clients to share presence information (e.g. in use, on- or off-line, "do not disturb") within a common contact list that can be readily integrated with corporate directories (Active Directory, LDAP). Using familiar and intuitive presence-based dialing that propelled the growth of instant messaging applications, users can easily initiate video calls between Polycom telepresence solutions and with CMA Desktop video clients by simply clicking names within the contact list. HDX Release 2.5 integration with Polycom CMA also allows IT administrators to easily upgrade, provision, and manage Polycom telepresence solutions throughout their network using standards-based management protocols.

"Polycom is tackling key issues that will help facilitate broader video adoption for its customers," said Roopam Jain, principal analyst of conferencing and collaboration at Frost & Sullivan. "Integrating telepresence solutions and desktop video with its new management platform has unique benefits for users and IT administrators. It creates a more cohesive environment for enterprise-wide video communication through presence-enabled dialing, as well as dramatically simplified provisioning for all Polycom video and telepresence solutions on the network."

Polycom also announced a migration program that enables existing ReadiManager™ SE200 customers to cost-effectively migrate to the new CMA platform by purchasing CMA licenses for a reduced cost and migrating existing ReadiManager SE200 licenses to the new CMA 4000 or CMA 5000 hardware, which they will receive at no additional charge. Polycom will also offer a discount for optional Polycom implementation services for qualifying customers. The limited-time program starts Oct. 20, 2008 and ends March 31, 2009. Program requirements, discount implementation criteria, and additional information are available through certified Polycom channel partners and on the Polycom website within the "Promotions" section under the "Products" category.

The HDX 2.5 software also introduces expanded capabilities for Polycom HDX telepresence solutions with embedded multipoint bridging. Those systems will now support continuous presence layouts (showing all sites on the screen) for both high definition and standard definition resolution. Polycom HDX systems also now support integration with the SoundStation® IP 7000 HD Voice conference phone, allowing telephone dialing, adjusting volume, sharing content, and use of the HD Voice conference phone as the microphone for Polycom HDX telepresence solutions.

The unification of telepresence and desktop video extends the Polycom VC2 vision of video as a pervasive component of unified communication in the enterprise -- enabling people to call anyone, anywhere, anytime from any device. Solutions under the Polycom VC2 vision provide the foundation for future, enhanced integration with Polycom strategic unified communications partners.
