Popularity of Facebook Games Presents New Opportunities for Brands

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2010) - Sony Ericsson, creators of the internet pinball game Emusicon Pinball, are advocating the use of social media gaming to bring new fans to a brand's social networks.

Recent statistics have illustrated the popularity of online gaming, especially those based on social networking sites. Figures suggest that half of Facebook user log-ins are specifically to play games through the social network. As well as this, 53% of Facebook users say they have played games at some point. Coupled with the fact that Facebook currently has over 500 million users, the amount of time users spend on social networks playing games is staggering.

The marketing possibilities of social networks are clear for brands to see. However, the rise in popularity of social network gaming over the past few months presents further opportunities for brands to exploit. Sony Ericsson has exemplified such tactics, with the introduction of a free online pinball game onto its official Facebook page.

Emusicon Pinball is an example of successful integration into social gaming. While pinball is traditionally a single player game, Sony Ericsson's computer pinball game encourages players to post their high scores on their Facebook walls, encouraging their friends to play. This helps create a more multiplayer element to the game. At a time when social network gaming is proving so popular, the ability to challenge friends to play a game is an inspiring way to spread the brand's name across social networks, thereby helping to increase its fan base.

Ben Padley, Head of Digital and CRM for Sony Ericsson, said: "The introduction Emusicon Pinball illustrated Sony Ericsson's successful integration into social network gaming. The Sony Ericsson Facebook page is designed to allow fans a suitable hub to discuss the brand and keep up to date with the latest news and releases. Emusicon Pinball offers fans another reason to return to the page and share such information with their friends, thereby increasing user numbers."
