Power.org Celebrates Two Decades of Power Architecture Technology Innovation and Leadership

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - February 3, 2011) -  Power.org, the organization that promotes and develops standards for Power Architecture® technology, is celebrating 20 years of innovation leading to unrivaled market leadership and a collaborative ecosystem that will continue advancing and creating new technology across an increasing breadth of markets and applications. Throughout the anniversary year Power.org will host events and activities designed to share the success of Power Architecture accomplishments, provide insight into the future of the technology and ecosystem. The first event will be exhibits at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The past two decades have witnessed the growth of the Power ISA series as the common thread for an extremely broad range of 32-bit to 64-bit devices, with the most recent versions -- Power ISA 2.04/2.05/2.06 -- supporting multicore, virtualization, hypervisor and the power management required for next generation systems. Power Architecture technology is pervasive, with $4.4B of the total 32/64 bit microprocessor market making it the #1 worldwide market share leader in 32-bit MPUs and the #2 worldwide leader in 64-bit CPUs. More than a billion Power Architecture technology-based chips have been built into electronics equipment in a wide range of markets.

Mobile World Congress, Feb. 14-17

Power.org, Freescale Semiconductor, and IBM, will highlight the latest advancement of Power Architecture technology and offerings, booth #2J56. AppliedMicro, ENEA, HCL Technologies, LSI, and Synopsys will be attending.

20 Years of Power Architecture Innovation

Number one in:

  • Core-based FPGA for Communications, Networking, Wireless Infrastructure

  • Embedded 32-bit MPU for Automotive, Communications/Networking, Industrial Automation, Medical, Military/Aerospace, Wireless Infrastructure

Leadership:

  • Automotive -- no other 32-bit core family covers more applications

  • Compute -- fastest (5GHz) and most resilient enterprise servers; market leadership in enterprise-class multifunctional printers

  • Consumer -- core technology for the newest generation of innovative game consoles (X-Box 360, Wii, PS3); first Android operating system port available as open source code for the embedded community. Widely used in Pachinko gaming machines in Japan.

  • High Performance Computing -- 2 of TOP10 and 5 of TOP20 of the world's most powerful supercomputers are Power Architecture based.

  • Military & Aerospace -- the only architecture used in every space mission to Mars

  • Wired Communications -- core embedded technology and intelligence for 50% of enterprise/core communications networks for switching and routing equipment

  • Wireless Communications -- de-facto standard in embedded telecom, wireless infrastructure market differentiated with high performance, low power SoCs
