PowerStream Donates $400,000 to Markham Stouffville Hospital

Donation provides added boost to capital campaign

YORK REGION, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 16, 2007) - It could be said that Markham Stouffville Hospital Corporation (the Hospital) has a stronger 'current connection', thanks to a $400,000 pledge from PowerStream Inc., York Region's largest electricity distribution company.

"As a founding business member of York Region Character Community Program and a corporation concerned with the health and welfare of the residents within its service territory, we feel it is important to support Markham Stouffville Hospital," Brian Bentz, PowerStream President and CEO said. "The donation will be earmarked to fund capital projects which will ultimately improve patient services and help save lives."

The donation will be provided to the Hospital by PowerStream through installment payments over a ten-year period.

This latest contribution by PowerStream is consistent with the company's historical involvement in supporting the fundraising efforts for the Hospital. Since the creation of PowerStream in 2004 following the merger of three local utilities, the company has provided over $30,000 in sponsorship support for the annual Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation Gala, a Markham community marquee event held every year in April.

"The generosity shown by PowerStream over the years has been tremendous," said Eric Tappenden, Chair of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation. "The company's continued support of our Hospital demonstrates its commitment to be a corporate citizen that can make a difference within the community it serves."

In recognition of the donation, an appreciation plaque, to be positioned just outside the Digital Radiology Suite in the Markham Site of the Hospital, will be dedicated to PowerStream at a ceremony later this year.

"I am certain that PowerStream appreciates the recognition it will be receiving from Markham Stouffville Hospital," Frank Scarpitti, Town of Markham Mayor and Vice-Chair of the PowerStream Board of Directors said. "But I also know that the company recognizes its real reward comes from the knowledge that this donation will ultimately benefit so many people within our community."
