PowerStream Employees Generate 'Big' Money at Big Bike Event

Three teams of riders raise more than $28,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation

VAUGHAN, ONTARIO and BARRIE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 4, 2009) - Ninety PowerStream employees put their hearts into the company's second year of participating in the Big Bike Challenge, raising more than $28,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This year's total easily surpassed the $11,786 raised in 2008.

PowerStream entered three employee teams in the 2009 Big Bike Challenge - two teams at an event held in Vaughan on May 11 and another at an event held in Barrie on May 27. Thanks to some friendly inter-office competition, all three teams were able to shatter their respective fundraising goals for this event.

"PowerStream and the employees at our four work locations strive to make a difference in the communities we serve," said Brian Bentz, PowerStream's President and CEO. "Heart related diseases can affect anyone. That's why we fundraise for this worthy cause."

This year, participating in the Big Bike Challenge had a lot more meaning for the staff at PowerStream. In the last six months, two PowerStream employees died due to heart-related illness, one just a day prior to the May 11 event.

As was the case in 2008, the Heart and Stroke Foundation recognized all PowerStream teams for their enthusiasm and dedication to the Big Bike Challenge events, awarding the 90 participating riders with the Foundation's Spirit Award.

"Honestly, PowerStream out did itself this year, not only with the fundraising but with everything, including the silly hats, the team chants and the great way that the employees dedicated the rides to the memory of their two colleagues," said Sonia Albertini, Area Coordinator of Corporate Programs for the York South Office of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

The Heart & Stroke Foundation has become one of several charities that PowerStream supports annually in addition to its sponsorship of numerous local organizations, community programs and activities within the company's service territory.
