PowerStream Helps to Shed New Light on Social Housing

Local utility provides social housing buildings with energy-efficient lights

YORK REGION, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 18, 2008) - PowerStream Inc., The Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC) and Green Light on a Better Environment (GLOBE) have joined forces to reduce energy consumption by replacing old incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

A total of 14,000 CFL bulbs were installed in 3,000 social housing units across PowerStream's service territory. This replacement program is expected to reduce electricity consumption by 977,928 kWh per year.

"This is a win for everyone," said Colin Gage, Chair of GLOBE and Vice-Chair of SHSC. "CFL bulbs use less energy than the traditional incandescent ones. Saving energy is important for the environment and saving money is important for social housing providers who will reinvest the savings in upkeep and programs."

This is the second time that PowerStream and SHSC have worked together on energy conservation. In April 2007 a similar initiative was carried out by the two organizations which included replacing 2,600 incandescent light bulbs with CFLs at the Observatory Towers social housing complex in Richmond Hill.

"The 2007 program was a tremendous success and we were pleased to be able to build upon it and work together with SHSC and GLOBE again," said Brian Bentz, President and CEO of PowerStream.

Richmond Hill Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor Brenda Hogg, Chair of York Region's Community Services and Housing Committee, said the program provided a perfect opportunity to upgrade the lighting in more than 900 units owned and operated by Housing York Inc., York Region's non-profit housing corporation.

"The new energy efficient lighting reduces our energy costs, lessens the impact on the environment and improves the quality of life for our residents, especially seniors who really appreciate better lighting."

PowerStream, SHSC and GLOBE see this as a chance to be proactive and engage residents in activities that help to develop a culture of conservation within the social housing sector. By educating and engaging residents, GLOBE hopes to use energy management and conservation to create sustainable affordable housing communities that not only serve the local community but are part of a larger movement.
