PowerStream Lights the way in Social Housing Conservation

Company donates 2,600 energy efficient light bulbs

YORK REGION, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 4, 2007) - The lights at the Observatory Towers social housing complex in Richmond Hill are about to shine a little longer, and at less cost. PowerStream Inc., York Region's largest electricity distribution company, has donated 2,600 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to the buildings located at 25 and 35 Marshall Street.

The donation is being delivered through the Social Housing Services Corporation's (SHSC) Green Light Initiative, which connects Ontario's social housing community with tools and incentives to lower their energy use and costs. Coordinated through SHSC, PowerStream provides social housing landlords with incentives for implementing energy-reducing measures that in turn, reduce the demand on York Region's electricity system.

"This program reduces costs for social housing landlords and residents through electricity management and conservation," said Brian Bentz, PowerStream President and Chief Executive Officer. "I am proud of our partnership with the Social Housing Services Corporation and what both parties have already achieved."

The value of the donated CFL bulbs is approximately $10,000, but the savings for Observatory Towers will be many times that over the bulbs' extended lifespan. The CFL bulbs will save 129,075 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy annually and will last up to 10 times longer than the incandescent bulbs currently in use. In 2006, PowerStream paid for the decommissioning of over 230 refrigerators from the two buildings and provided financial support to help replace the old units with energy-efficient models, saving 181,700 kWh annually.

"PowerStream has been very helpful to the residents of Observatory Towers," says Gordon Chong, SHSC Chairman. "The conservation programs in place for this community will have a positive impact on the lives of residents for several years. We are pleased with PowerStream's support of our Green Light Initiative, which is growing a culture of conservation in social housing."

The Social Housing Services Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that develops and delivers value-added services and programs to social housing providers and municipalities in Ontario. SHSC offers business-oriented solutions to address the needs of the social housing community, including insurance, investment, gas purchasing, energy management and research programs.

PowerStream Inc. is one of the largest local electricity distribution companies in Ontario, providing service to more than 230,000 residential and business customers in the municipalities of Aurora, Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan. It is an incorporated entity, jointly owned by the City of Vaughan and the Town of Markham.
