BARRIE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 29, 2012) - The Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce has presented PowerStream with its 'Green Community Award' in recognition of the utility's many environmental initiatives and their positive impact on the community.
The award was one of several handed to several organizations at the 2012 Barrie Business Awards held Wednesday night at the Barrie Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Centre. The annual event recognizes the contribution of Barrie businesses to the continued growth and success of the community and highlights achievement in 12 categories.
Over the past year, PowerStream, a community-owned energy solutions company that provides power and related services to customers in several municipalities including Barrie, has demonstrated environmental leadership and promoted sustainability both within and outside the organization.
The company's environmental initiatives in the Barrie area in 2012 included the installation of solar generation systems on 20 municipally-owned buildings, the delivery of energy-saving conservation programs to residential and business customers, promoting electric vehicle technology and providing support to local environmental awareness events such as the Barrie Earth Hour Music Festival and Ecofest.
PowerStream has also improved on its own internal environmental practices and further engaged its employees in sustainability programs such as waste diversion, vanpooling and carpooling as well as through events including Environment Awareness Week, Earth Hour, Bike to Work Day and Clean Air Commute Week.
