Poynt Corporation Wins ASTech's 2010 Innovation in Information and Communications Technology Award

Stephen Lougheed, Chairman, Poynt Corporation, wins for Outstanding Contribution to the Alberta Science and Technology Community

Poynt Corp.'s Chairman, Stephen Lougheed, was also recognized for his outstanding contribution to the Alberta Science and Technology community.

ASTech was created 21 years ago to celebrate and promote the achievements of Alberta's scientific and technological communities. To date, they have recognized 240 leaders--individuals and organizations operating world-class technologies on a local and global scale. In doing so, they elevate the province's status as a science and technology leader and inspire future innovation in Alberta and around the world. ASTech believes that by showcasing the outstanding innovation coming from Alberta, others are stimulated to excel and achieve even greater outcomes. This year, ASTech recognized 12 award winners – the brightest minds and most innovative enterprises practicing and operating in the province today.

The Innovation in ICT award is presented to an individual, team or organization that has demonstrated leadership and innovation resulting in the successful development and/or commercialization of a novel product or application of Information, Communications Technology, and that has had a significant impact in enabling applications in a sector. Poynt Corp. was recognized for the development and commercialization of the Poynt Local Search application and their innovative use of geomatics and large scale data sourcing and integration. The Company was also recognized for their impact in Alberta's science and technology community by developing a world-class mobile solution available in eight countries to over four million users.

Mr. Lougheed has made significant breakthroughs in business activities yielding hundreds of millions of dollars in new value and hundreds of jobs in Canada and Alberta. He's also been instrumental in developing public policy affecting Alberta's science and technology industry. The recognition of his contribution to Alberta's science and technology community includes his involvement with three past and current ASTech Award winners; spearheading the creation of Alberta Information and Communications Technology Institute; his tenure on the Alberta Science and Research Authority; and, the establishment of Tecterra, Canada's Centre of Excellence for Integrated Resource Management.
