Practice Greenhealth Announces Business Leadership Coalition for Environmentally Preferable Purchasing

Coalition Presents Statement of Intent to Promote Products, Processes and Green Elements With Less Impact on the Environment and Human Health

RESTON, VA--(Marketwire - Mar 12, 2012) - Practice Greenhealth today announced the 15 members of the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Business Leadership Coalition (EPP Business Leadership Coalition), a group of 15 leading businesses in the health care sector that have been brought together by Practice Greenhealth to assist hospitals and others in the sector to promote the purchase of products and processes that are less hazardous to the environment. Operating under the banner of the EPP Business Leadership Coalition, the companies have established a statement of intent and set of objectives that will guide their activities going forward.

Practice Greenhealth created the EPP Business Leadership Coalition as a part of the overall Greening the Supply Chain™ Initiative, which provides a common set of tools and resources for purchasers, suppliers and manufacturers to shift the health care market towards using more environmentally preferable products and services.

In their founding statement of intent, the 15 members of the EPP Business Leadership Coalition pledge to closely examine their own supply chains in order to identify practices, processes, materials or social considerations that may impact the products offered to the health care sector. They will also share best practices uncovered in their own businesses in "an honest effort to bring about positive change both internally and externally."

Many products used in health care have environmentally preferable alternatives that can reduce health impacts, eliminate hazardous waste, save energy and water, or help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of healthcare facilities. On February 7, 2012, the 15 companies of the EPP Business Leadership Coalition agreed to a groundbreaking statement of intent and objectives that foster their work together to:

  • Identify materials of concern and facilitate evaluation of alternative materials that may reduce or eliminate environmental impact;
  • Promote effective approaches to reduce environmental product lifecycle impacts;
  • Provide information and outreach to other institutions and companies, including hospitals, healthcare suppliers and Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs).

"In health care, we strive for a healthy environment and to do no harm," said Practice Greenhealth Executive Director Laura Wenger, RN. "By working together, the companies in the EPP Business Leadership Coalition are helping health care institutions and Group Purchasing Organizations to choose products and processes with less negative environmental impact."

"These 15 companies are truly demonstrating leadership for the future of health care," Wenger continued. "They have come together with Practice Greenhealth to learn from each other and to change the kinds of products and services that health care institutions use every day. While this is not an easy task, we are mutually committed to work transparently and collaboratively to bring about progress."

The 15 members of the EPP Business Leadership Coalition are:

Eastman Chemical
HDR Inc.
Johnson & Johnson
SRI Surgical
Stryker Sustainability Solutions
