Prairie Village Dentist to Review New Technology for Several Oral Health Publications

Prairie View Dentists' Dr. Grant Smith Is Writing About a New Device That Helps Detect Cavities

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS--(Marketwired - October 23, 2014) - Dr. Grant Smith, who provides some of the best cosmetic dentistry in the Prairie Village area, will be published in several oral health publications giving his testimonial about a revolutionary tool he uses to detect dental caries, also known as tooth decay or cavities.

The Dexis CariVu is a portable device that uses transillumination technology to identify caries in a patient's teeth. The device uses near-infrared light to view through the tooth's enamel and expose lesions. It is hand-held, easy to use and requires no preparation of the teeth or mouth.

Dr. Smith has been using Dexis sensors for many years and recently purchased the CariVu. Now his entire staff is using the device regularly. He was asked to publish a series of articles describing his experience with the CariVu.

"While composing the articles, I had the opportunity to refine and perfect my skills in using these sorts of technologies, as well as drawing consensus within the practice for how they should be used," Dr. Smith said. "Digital technology drastically reduces the use of ionizing radiation, and in the case of the CariVu, completely eliminates it. This is safer for the patient and the practitioner."

Dr. Smith said he hopes his reviews can help other dentists realize how transillumination technology can effectively detect dental caries.

"I'm glad that my experience is something that people want to know more about. I hope that it helps them adopt a technology that I believe is superior to that which we had before," Dr. Smith said.

Dr. Smith was introduced to dentistry by his father, Dr. Robert Smith, who is the former owner of the practice. Dr. Smith purchased the practice from his father and built a new location in 2013. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. Following his graduation, he completed his residency at the school's special patient care clinic.

Dr. Smith's practice has eight dental operatories and an in-office dental laboratory for fabrication of bleach trays, bite guards and partial implants. He offers cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry and preventive care in his state-of-the-art facility. The office uses a huge sterilization area with autoclaves; digital X-rays with a digital pano machine; intraoral cameras; DentalVibe to reduce pain of injections; soft-tissue laser; and Diagnodent. Individual treatments include Snap-On Smile; tray whitening; teeth whitening at the dentist with Zoom whitening; crowns; fillings; cavity risk analysis with CariFree program; fluoride varnish; mouth guards for sports; TMJ pain relief; dental implants; partial implants; denture fabrication; and periodontal treatments.

Patients who visit Dr. Smith know that he is an affordable dentist who focuses on preventive care. The revolutionary system CariFree allows Dr. Smith to detect why patients are getting cavities. The information is then given to the patients so they can reverse the process before drilling or a filling is needed. Dr. Smith also has the ability to test patient's saliva for PH and bacteria levels.

Another member of the practice, Dr. Tony Hockett, received his dental degree from the University of Iowa. He seeks out continuing education courses in order to update this skills in technology and dentistry techniques. Dr. Hockett has a passion for treatment and diagnosis.

Dr. Smith has in-office specialists for orthodontics, endodontics and oral surgery. To find out the cost of cosmetic dentistry or to find a good dentist, visit the website at or call 913-214-8474.
