Pratt & Whitney Canada presents $78,000 cheque for women's shelters

LONGUEUIL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 29, 2005) - Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. (P&WC) yesterday delivered a cheque for $78,356 to seven Montreal South Shore shelters for women and children who are victims of family violence. The funds represent half the proceeds from the company's 19th annual Les Femmeuses art exhibition and sale held at its Longueuil head office last April and attended by nearly 5,000 visitors, while the other half goes to the artists who sold their works.

"Each of the shelters is receiving $11,193 from this year's Les Femmeuses," Alain M. Bellemare, President, P&WC, said during a cheque presentation ceremony. "We'd like to thank the public for its continuing generosity and support, the artists for their quality work, and all employees and volunteers who contributed to the success of this important cultural and community event."

The 19th edition of Les Femmeuses featured 144 artworks by professional women artists in the visual arts. In all, 113 works of art and 40 prints were sold. Combined with sales of T-shirts, catalogs and donations, it raised more than $150,000.

Launched in 1986, Les Femmeuses is rapidly approaching the magic one-million-dollar mark in donations to the seven shelters, which together have helped more than 35,000 women and children. Funds donated allow them to provide lodging, offer 24/7 telephone service, organize individual or group meetings, and arrange accompaniment during legal proceedings.

The shelters receiving funds from Les Femmeuses are: Carrefour pour Elle in Longueuil; La Cle sur la Porte in St-Hyacinthe; La Maison Simonne Monet-Chartrand in Chambly; La Re-Source in Chateauguay; Maison Hina in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu; Maison La Source in Sorel-Tracy; and Pavillon Marguerite de Champlain in St-Hubert.
