PreK-12 Testing Market Holds Its Breath for Common Core: Simba Information

STAMFORD, CT--(Marketwire - Jun 12, 2012) - Online assessments are poised to catch up with their print counterparts in a fifty-fifty split by the 2014-2015 school year, in tandem with the implementation of Common Core Assessments, according to a recent research report from publishing forecast firm Simba Information. The integration of Common Core Assessments in classroom instruction also is expected to boost adaptive learning technologies and 1:1 learning.

Online testing currently holds roughly 38% of the market and it's expected to jump more than 12% by the 2014-2015 school year, according to the report. Publishers, such as Vantage Learning, CTB/McGraw Hill and Wireless Generation, have already begun developing new products to smooth the transition.

"The new Common Core State Standards and the new assessments targeted for online delivery have the potential to significantly change education in the U.S.," said Kathy Mickey, senior education analyst at Simba Information. "However, the technology capabilities of school districts pose a significant challenge in the move towards online testing."

New Common Core classroom assessments, which will be used to help drive instruction and gauge individual student progress, will focus on more performance-based and media-driven items, including adaptive learning technologies. Coupled with a move towards digital textbooks and instruction, the report finds the implementation of a formative learning process into an individualized learning environment is a key factor for success.

"These new assessments will have more meaningful results, which can be used to influence student achievement," said Mickey. "While districts are moving to implement the new Common Core State Standards to prepare for the new testing, districts also are concerned about how much funding will be made available to make the new testing programs a reality."
