Premium Seafoods CEO Applauds Decision to Increase the Surf Clam Quota

ARICHAT, NS--(Marketwired - July 18, 2015) - Edgar Samson, CEO of Premium Seafoods Group is very pleased with the announcement by Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Honorable Gail Shea to increase the overall Total Allowable Catch(TAC) for the Surf Clam Fishery on Grand and Banquereau Banks to 52 000 metric tons(mt). Premium has followed developments in this fishery very closely for a number of years and the company was convinced that there were sufficient scientific data to support a quota increase.

Premium Seafoods exports seafood to numerous countries throughout the world. Through its customers, the company has ascertained that there is a very strong demand for Surf Clams. It is important to note that this demand is especially strong in the Asia Pacific region where coincidentally the Canadian Government is now working with 11 partners on the Trans-Pacific Partnership(TPP). The TPP will open new doors to Canadian seafood, reinforcing the fishing industry which forms the backbone of many rural communities in Atlantic Canada.

Premium Seafoods believes that Minister Shea's decision is good for the Surf Clam fishery, good for the industry, good for the Canadian economy but also good for small rural communities heavily dependent on the fisheries.

Premium Seafoods Group has been in business for over 30 years. The company's processing facilities are located in small rural communities on Isle Madame, Cape Breton Island. The company employs over 200 full and part-time workers in the crab, shrimp, lobster, ground-fish fisheries and in wholesale and retail fish sales. Premium Seafoods Group has annual sales of over $50,000,000.
