Presence Saint Joseph Hospital Physician Leads Clinic's Groundbreaking Study of Relationship Between HIV, HPV and Anal Cancer

Anal Dysplasia Clinic Midwest One of Only a Handful of Locations Selected to Enroll All Gender HIV+ Volunteers in a Paid Study to Prevent Anal Cancer

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Mar 18, 2015) - Today, Presence Saint Joseph Hospital announced, in partnership with the Anal Dysplasia Clinic Midwest, the clinic's participation in a groundbreaking new study to learn more about the development of anal cancer among people with HIV. Presence Saint Joseph Hospital Physician, Gary Bucher, MD, will lead research efforts in our area as part of The Anchor Study. Dr. Bucher is also Medical Director of the Anal Dysplasia Clinic Midwest, one of only a handful of sites in the US where the eight year research program will be conducted. Results from the study will potentially help reduce cases of anal cancer.

"As HIV/AIDS treatments have increased life spans and made living with the disease easier, a new set of challenges has emerged and the rates of anal cancer are increasing dramatically among all HIV positive people," said Dr. Bucher. He added, "Recent research shows 1 in 10 HIV positive men will develop anal cancer over their lifetime. It's critical we learn more about the relationship between HIV, HPV and anal cancer."

Anal cancer is caused by Human Papillomavirus or HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection. Study results will help determine if removing HPV-damaged cells from the anus will prevent anal cancer.

Both male and female HIV positive volunteers over the age of 35 will be screened for pre-cancerous tissue. Depending on screening results, volunteers will be enrolled and randomized to either receive treatment or be monitored every six months. Selected volunteers will be compensated for participating in the study.

"We founded one of the first HIV inpatient programs in the Chicago metropolitan area here at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in 1987," said Dr. Roberta Luskin-Hawk, Presence Saint Joseph Hospital President & CEO. "We continue that commitment to our community today by supporting the Anal Dysplasia Clinic Midwest and helping Anchor Study participants achieve the best health and wellness possible."

The study is launching just ahead of Anal Cancer Awareness Day, March 21, 2015. Anal Cancer Awareness Day is meant to increase understanding and help remove any stigma or embarrassment around this relatively unknown type of cancer.

For more information about the study and how to enroll head to or contact Dr. Bucher at the Anal Dysplasia Clinic Midwest, 312-623-ANAL (2625).
