President of Pitzer College Discusses Her Latest Book on Mark Twain

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - March 2, 2010) -  Laura Skandera Trombley, President of Pitzer College and Author of the soon-to-be-released "Mark Twain's Other Woman: The Hidden Story of His Final Years," will discuss her book with TOWN HALL Los Angeles on the release date, Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at The Regency Club.

Knopf Publishers describes the book: "Sixteen years of sleuthing by Laura Skandera Trombley reveals the carefully hidden -- and often deliberately ignored -- truth about Twain's final years. Isabel Lyon was Twain's assistant and constant companion. She handled his schedule and finances, nursed him through illnesses, managed his daughters, ran his household and traveled with him. Yet, Twain fired her, blackmailed her, publicly denounced her and called her 'a traitor, a conspirator, a filthy-minded slut pining for seduction.' Through Lyon's secret journals and letters, the book reveals the destructive relationship between them and the dark secrets of Twain's last years."

Said Trombley, "My view of Twain has always been that he was an extraordinary human being. And through sheer genius he managed to overcome all of the obstacles in his life. In some ways we've never really done a very good job of accounting for that. I think in many ways the work that I've done helps us understand a little bit what motivated him, what encouraged him and what he feared."

Trombley became the fifth president of Pitzer College in 2002. During her tenure, Pitzer students and alumni have received more Fulbright Fellowships per 1000 students than any other college or university in the US. Trombley has authored dozens of scholarly articles on Twain. Trombley's other books on Twain include "Mark Twain in the Company of Women" and "Constructing Mark Twain: New Directions in Scholarship."
