President of Systems Biology Institute Appointed to Advisory Board of Strategic News Service's Nutritional Microanalysis Global Initiative

FRIDAY HARBOR, WA--(Marketwired - Aug 7, 2013) - The Strategic News Service's Nutritional Microanalysis Global Initiative is pleased to announce the appointment of Leroy Hood to its Scientific Advisory Board.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have a scientist of Leroy Hood's abilities joining us in this important new initiative. I have no doubt that his presence will help us unravel the important scientific breakthroughs in connecting the detailed knowledge of what we eat, drink and breathe, with our health," said Mark Anderson, SNS CEO and FiRe Chair.

Dr. Leroy Hood is a pioneer in the systems approach to biology and medicine. His research has focused on the study of molecular immunology, biotechnology, and genomics. Dr. Hood's professional career began at Caltech, where he and his colleagues developed the DNA gene sequencer and synthesizer and the protein synthesizer and sequencer -- four instruments that paved the way for the successful mapping of the human genome. He is the President and Founder of the Institute for Systems Biology.

A pillar in the biotechnology field, Dr. Hood has played a role in founding more than 14 biotechnology companies, including Amgen, Applied Biosystems, Darwin, The Accelerator, and Integrated Diagnostics. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. Of the more than 6,000 scientists worldwide who belong to one or more of these academies, he is one of only 15 people accepted to all three. He is also a member of the American Philosophical Society and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His work has been widely published, and he has co-authored numerous textbooks in biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, and genetics, as well as a popular book on the human genome project, The Code of Codes.

The goal of the Strategic News Service Global Initiative on Nutritional Microanalysis is to create a new field of medicine and a research platform for understanding human health and disease, and their connection to the human genome, by evaluating human inputs on a chemical level, and thereby better understand their effects on the body's processes. NM currently operates in the US, and its work is the direct output of ideas that have grown from the SNS Future in Review Conferences. FiRe consistently creates new efforts in global cooperation, with the goal of improving the world through the appropriate application of technology.

Dr. Hood is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lasker Award for Studies of Immune Diversity, the Kyoto Prize in advanced technology, the Heinz Award for pioneering work in Systems Biology, and most recently, the coveted NAE 2011 Fritz J. and Delores H. Russ Prize for automating DNA sequencing that revolutionized biomedicine and forensic science.

He received the 2012 National Medal of Science, the highest honor the President of the United States can award a citizen. In addition to having received 17 honorary degrees from prestigious universities in the US and abroad, Lee has published more than 700 peer-reviewed articles and currently holds 36 patents.

SNS founded the FiRe Conference, which the Economist calls "the best technology conference in the world," in 2003. FiRe exposes global thought leaders to new high-potential ideas as part of an accurate portrait of the future. Participants often then create technology-based solutions to current local and global problems. FiRe 2014 will take place May 20-23 at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach, CA.
