Preventing Drive Failures

BURBANK, CA--(Marketwire - February 22, 2010) - Every so often, a technological advance will surprise us and prevent catastrophes that we had actually predicted and still expected to happen. For example, an IT department expects hard drives to last at the most a couple years, as over time that's been the norm. But the implementation of a new technology dealing with file fragmentation does such a great job that the drives don't fail, and instead continue to last far beyond their expected life spans.

Taking a closer look, file fragmentation does take a major toll on hard drive life. When a file is fragmented into hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of fragments, the extra I/Os needed to retrieve that file cause excessive movement of the read/write head on a drive. The arm and the head being mechanical parts mean that the movement wears them out.

Defragmentation certainly boosts hard drive life, drastically reducing file fragments and hence the excessive I/Os. But now a whole new level of operation has been achieved when dealing with fragmentation -- now a majority of it can be prevented altogether.

As it turns out, this approach to fragmentation is causing drives to last far longer than expected.

"In the past without Diskeeper® performance software I experienced failed drives more often," said Doug Spieth, IT Director with Tippmann Sports, LLC. "A drive failing used to be anticipated three years ago. We have not had a drive fail in over a year in my estimation."

Utilizing a new revolutionary technology called IntelliWrite™ fragmentation prevention, Diskeeper 2010 performance software intelligently writes files to the disk to prevent up to 85 percent of fragmentation from occurring. Coupled with superior defragmentation technology, Diskeeper 2010 delivers a complete performance solution for every Windows system at every site, and goes far beyond what defragmentation alone can achieve. Significant savings are also achieved reducing energy consumption and cooling -- even more than is done with conventional defragmentation.

"We have Diskeeper 2010 deployed on all new machines and all servers," Spieth added. "I must say that the IntelliWrite technology is one of the best features so far. It keeps the drive from becoming fragmented in the first place. I consider it a proactive measure against fragmentation."

In its various tasks, Diskeeper performance software operates completely automatically, requiring no intervention from system personnel beyond installation. It means that dealing with file fragmentation is a task that can be crossed off the IT list -- permanently.

"I would absolutely recommend Diskeeper to others," Speith concluded. "It is the only software that is true and straight to the point. It should be the first thing considered when building your software tools for system maintenance."
