PREVNet Leader Invited to Lady Gaga's Anti-Bullying Foundation Launch

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 1, 2012) - Dr. Wendy Craig, Scientific Co-director of Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network (PREVNet) and Professor of Psychology at Queen's University was invited to participate in an a think tank at Harvard University as part of Lady Gaga's 'Born this Way Foundation' launch. Lady Gaga and her mother officially launched the foundation yesterday with the support of Oprah Winfrey. Named after her hit album and single, the goal of Lady Gaga's Foundation is 'to foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated'.

'On behalf of PREVNet, I was honoured to participate and hope that this opportunity will not only bring more awareness to the issue but also to effective, science-based strategies and tools that can promote healthy relationships and truly make a difference for today's children and youth' said Dr. Craig.

PREVNet was established in 2006 through the Networks of Centres of Excellence - New Initiative program (NCE-NI) - a federal research mechanism designed to bridge the gap between research and practice. PREVNet's mission is to stop bullying in Canada and to promote safe and healthy relationships. At its core, PREVNet serves as the 'bridge' - linking researchers with national organizations to enable networking, interaction and partnership. The two-way flow of information, strategies, tools and programs has become the basis for PREVNet's strategy to support and enhance the practice of all those who work with children and youth.

Today, the PREVNet network includes 58 leading researchers and their students from 14 academic disciplines and 48 national youth-serving organizations such as Big Brother Big Sisters of Canada, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Girl Guides of Canada, Scouts Canada, Red Cross and UNICEF Canada. Over the past five years, PREVNet has co-created more than 80 organization- specific bullying prevention initiatives, including educational presentations, activities and resources. This unique national network is the first of its kind in Canada and the world and provides an unprecedented opportunity for social-cultural change.
