Prizes Awarded to CA-Sprott Business Competition Winners

Scarborough and Mississauga Students Excelled in Entrepreneurial Simulation

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 9, 2011) - Teams from Mississauga's The Woodlands School and Scarborough's Woburn Collegiate Institute topped their respective categories in the re-launched CA-Sprott Business Competition (CA-SBC), an on-line business simulation. Just under 7,000 students from across Ontario took part in the CA-SBC, which ran between February and the finals in May.

Developed by Carleton University's Sprott School of Business and sponsored by the Ontario CA Institute, the CA-Sprott Business Competition (CA-SBC) pits high school students against one another as they experience the joys and challenges of running their own company, all while competing for cash prizes. Players make decisions relating to marketing, accounting, sales and more, while guiding their web-based virtual companies to glorious success or ignominious failure. The CA-SBC also provides high school business teachers with an innovative, hands-on teaching tool for their classrooms.

"The Sprott Business Competition is a free, entertaining and engaging way for students to test business theory in practice and make their classes more fun," said Dr. Jerry Tomberlin, Dean, Sprott School of Business. "This year's competitors were dedicated and creative. We can expect to see many of these potential entrepreneurs entering the ranks of business in the near future and doing very well for themselves and our communities."

This year's prizewinners are:

  • 1st Place Aaron Ng, Kevin Tran, Benjamin Han from The Woodlands School, Mississauga

"The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario is proud to support the CA-Sprott Business Competition because it helps educate young people about entrepreneurship, the life blood of our economy," said Rod Barr, FCA, President and CEO of the Institute. "This year's winners and the other participants also learned something important that many students don't know – business and competition are fun. CAs and other successful business professionals don't just go to work to earn a paycheque; they go because they relish the challenge of solving problems and building dynamic organizations."
