TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - December 05, 2013) - Scotiabank today announced a $25,000 donation to ProAction Cops & Kids, a charitable organization that supports programs developed and delivered by police officers that target at-risk youth across Toronto, Hamilton and Durham Region.
"We believe that everyone needs a team to belong to, which is why youth and sports are an important part of our Bright Future philanthropic program," said Brian Porter, Scotiabank's President and CEO. "We share Canadians' passion for hockey, and are proud to support ProAction Cops & Kids in the incredible work they do to keep young people engaged and active, building stronger communities for all of us."
The donation will go towards ProAction Cops & Kids' hockey programs, which include after school and girls' hockey leagues, as well as one-day hockey events that introduce new Canadians and new players to the sport. More than half of ProAction's programs are sports related with hockey being one of the top sports of choice.
"So many youth involved in our programs have never had the opportunity to take part in organized team sports. The cost is simply too high and they end up either watching from the side lines or engaging in problem activities," said Jean Milligan, ProAction's Executive Director. "Through this generous donation from Scotiabank, ProAction is able to give these young people the chance to belong to a team, play a true Canadian sport and be coached and mentored by police officers who help guide them to better life choices."
Scotiabank has a long tradition of supporting hockey in Canada and the heart of Scotiabank's hockey sponsorship program is in communities. Our support of community hockey happens organically because of the passionate, personal involvement of Scotiabankers. Under the Scotiabank Community Hockey Sponsorship Program, part of Scotiabank's Bright Future philanthropic program, each of our more than 1,000 branches country-wide are given $1,000 to sponsor a minor hockey team or league in their community. In 2012, more than 4,500 community hockey teams and leagues received sponsorship.
