Productive Dialogue Between the Governor General and the President of Ukraine in Kyiv

KYIV, UKRAINE--(Marketwire - April 23, 2009) - Upon arrival in Kyiv on the occasion of a State visit to Ukraine, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond were welcomed by His Excellency Viktor Yushchenko, President of Ukraine, during a ceremony with military honours.

The Governor General then met with the President to discuss, among other things, Canada's support for Ukraine in its efforts toward democratic transformation and economic reform. In a statement to the press, the Governor General commended Ukraine for the work it has done since its independence in 1991:

"I sincerely hope that this visit will form a solid foundation on which to build our relations and opportunities for partnership in every sector," announced the Governor General. "You can count on Canada's support as we continue to forge strong ties between our peoples, develop our bilateral relations, and stand beside you in your Euro-Atlantic aspirations."

The Governor General also met privately with Her Excellency Yulia Tymoshenko, Prime Minister of Ukraine, after which a luncheon was held in her honour.

The State visit to Ukraine runs from April 23 to 26. The State visit to the Kingdom of Norway will run from April 28 to 30, 2009.
