Professional Women's Tennis Returns to the DC Metro Area This Summer

The Mid-Atlantic Women's Tennis Championships Kicks Off July 23

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - May 10, 2011) - Professional women's tennis returns to the DC metro area with the debut of the Mid-Atlantic Women's Tennis Championships, a WTA International Level event brought to you by Lagardère, a designation for only one of three tournaments in the United States.


  • In 2011, the International Level will consist of 32 tournaments worldwide. The event will be a single elimination format consisting of 32 main draw singles players, 16 main draw doubles teams and 32 qualifying singles players. The tournament will feature three match courts, including a 2,500-seat stadium court.
  • The event will feature the world's best female athletes, representing a diverse range of nationalities. Players include top-15 ranked and premier Israeli athlete, Shahar Peer; 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist, Melanie Oudin; six-time WTA singles titlist, Jelena Dokic; and up-and-coming American teenager, Sloane Stephens.

The tournament has five player commitments to-date.
Shahar Peer, the tournament's top ranked player currently has a ranking of number 14 in the world. She has won a total of five WTA singles titles, including the 2009 Guangzhou title, in addition to finishing as the runner-up at two events. She has also served on the Israeli Fed Cup Team for eight consecutive years and the 2008 Israeli Olympic Team.

Lucie Safarova, currently ranked number 32 in the world and throughout her career, she has won a total of four WTA singles titles, in addition to finishing as the runner-up in five tournaments, including most recently in the 2011 Kuala Lumpur event. She has played on the Czech Republic Fed Cup Team for seven years and served on the 2008 Czech Republic Olympic Team.

Jelena Dokic, currently ranked number 62 in the world and holds a total of six WTA singles titles, including her most recent win in Kuala Lumpur this year, four WTA doubles titles, in addition to finishing as the runner-up for seven singles events. She served on the Australian Fed Cup Team for three years as well as the Australian Olympic Team in 2000.

Melanie Oudin, a Marietta, GA native currently ranked number 89 in the world, who received the WTA Newcomer of the Year Award in 2009. She has served on the American Fed Cup Team for the past three consecutive years. Oudin is best known for her Quarterfinal run in the 2009 US Open.

Sloane Stephens, a Ft. Lauderdale, FL native currently ranked number 150 in the world. Stephens had a breakthrough year on the ITF Junior Circuit in 2008. She turned pro in 2009 and reached the 2nd round of the 2009 US Open. During the summer, she also played World Team Tennis for the New York Buzz.

The Tennis Center at College Park is a USTA Regional Training Center, home of the Junior Tennis Champions Center training program, as well as, the University of Maryland tennis teams.
