Project Homeless Connect in Calgary- Another Huge Success!

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Feb. 28, 2009) - Today, Calgary's homeless and at-risk individuals and families received services and support at Project Homeless Connect (PHC), which was presented by the Calgary Homeless Foundation and sponsored by Petro-Canada.

"I'm happy with the way we were able to help Calgarians today," said Tim Richter, President and CEO of the Calgary Homeless Foundation. "We couldn't have done this without the 54 agencies, more than 140 volunteers and numerous businesses who donated their time and resources. We are especially pleased with the strong support from our financial and in-kind sponsor Petro-Canada, as well as Brookfield Properties who provided the venue."

PHC is a one-day event where homeless or near-homeless individuals and families are provided with many services and supplies in one location. Services provided included access to housing, medical treatment, mental health services, income support, employment counselling, veterans and aboriginal affairs, haircuts and more. Participants also received comfort kits, clothing, footwear, and a nutritious lunch.

"We were grateful for the opportunity to sponsor this PHC event," said Andrew Stephens, Petro-Canada's senior vice president, corporate relations. "I, along with a number of Petro-Canada employees, had a great experience volunteering. We are looking forward to three more PHC events this year."

Petro-Canada is a strong supporter in the Calgary community, partnering with a number of non-profit organizations, such as the Calgary Homeless Foundation, to make a positive and lasting contribution.

PHC provides immediate and tangible help for Calgarians experiencing homelessness or at-risk of being homeless. John, a past participant of PHC who had previously spent 12 years on the street, was on site to talk about his positive experience with PHC. John turned his life around, including overcoming his addiction and obtaining rental accommodation, but he had an outstanding issue with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that limited his income. Then when John attended PHC in November, he connected with the CRA and was amazed when the issue was resolved in only two days. He now receives an extra $158 every month.

The next three PHC events are scheduled for May 23, September 19 and November 21 and take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Petro-Canada Centre, 150 - 6th Avenue SW, Calgary.
