Prometric Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Computer Based Testing

BALTIMORE, MD--(Marketwire - January 26, 2011) -  Prometric, the leading global provider of testing and assessment services, today announced the celebration of its 20th anniversary conducting computer based testing (CBT). Having pioneered large-scale computerized testing 20 years ago, Prometric has since administered more than 100 million exams to test takers worldwide using this increasingly popular delivery model.

While Prometric delivered its first computer based test in 1989, it was 1991 before any appreciable exam volume was processed. In fact, in the early days of CBT there were only a handful of organizations, including ETS, Microsoft, the National Board of Medical Examiners, Novell and a few others, who were doing it on an experimental basis. By January 1995 Prometric had delivered its one-millionth test and had 40 clients on record. Early adopters of the technology and improvements made to the test delivery platforms gave birth to an industry exceeding $3 billion in size and including organizations from almost every profession imaginable. Prometric alone delivers, on average, almost 10 million exams each year on behalf of approximately 400 clients via specially configured computers at secure test centers around the globe.

The candidate's testing experience has evolved substantially since the start of computer based testing. The comparatively slow, bulky computers and monochrome monitors of the late eighties have been replaced with high-speed computers and flat screen monitors capable of supporting sophisticated exams, innovative question types and multimedia-rich test content. Testing centers where tests are taken have also evolved substantially to now include modern components like biometric fingerprint capture, digital scanners and many other forms of candidate identity verification.

"At Prometric we are constantly investing in order to challenge ourselves to grow and innovate on behalf of our clients around the world," said Michael Brannick, president and CEO of Prometric. "While new organizations in our industry have certainly emerged over time to join in the further development of this important global business, we are proud that, having led the development of large-scale computer based testing, we continue to provide services to test publishers to distribute ever evolving high stakes tests to more people in more countries, more reliably and more securely. With non U.S. emerging markets continuing to grow at a tremendous pace I am confident that our focus on computer-based testing methods, tools and techniques will continue to play a key role in helping to make tests that are valid, reliable and fair. As long as there is a need for qualified individuals with proven knowledge, skills and abilities there will be a need for licensure and certification testing. And as long as there is a need for testing, Prometric will proudly continue its role as industry leader, pioneer and innovator on behalf of our clients and the test takers they serve."
