Prominent Cdn Author to be Named First Carol Shields Writer-in-Res

Don Shields & Lloyd Axworthy to name inaugural University of Winnipeg Writer-in-Res in Toronto at Random House Reception on Monday Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Assignment Editor, Books Editor, Education Editor, Lifestyle Editor WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 21, 2005) - Don Shields and members of the Shields family will join Lloyd Axworthy, President of The University of Winnipeg, and Susan Thompson, CEO of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, to name the first recipient of The University of Winnipeg Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence.

Many guests attending the reception will proceed to the world premiere of Carol Shields' book-to-play "Unless" at the CanStage Bluma Appel Theatre (27 Front Street East in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts). The stage adaptation was written by Carol and her daughter Sara Cassidy.

The Shields family generously provided $100,000 to start The University of Winnipeg Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence program. Carol Shields was the much-loved Chancellor at The University of Winnipeg from 1996-2000.
