Prominent Lawyer Honoured with Bar Award

CBABC Georges A. Goyer, Q.C. Memorial Award

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2012) - The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch (CBABC) awarded an outstanding BC lawyer at the 2012 Annual Bench and Bar Dinner where members of the legal community gathered to celebrate the profession and recognize outstanding individuals. M. Joyce DeWitt-Van Oosten, Q.C. was bestowed the CBABC's highest honour - the Georges A. Goyer, Q.C. Memorial Award presented by BC Branch President, Kerry L. Simmons.

The annual Georges A. Goyer, Q.C. Memorial Award was created in 1992 to recognize exceptional contributions to the legal profession, to jurisprudence, or to the law in British Columbia. The award was established in memory of Georges A. Goyer, Q.C., a respected member of the BC Branch, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

The 2012 recipient, M. Joyce DeWitt-Van Oosten, Q.C., is a distinguished and recognized lawyer in British Columbia currently serving as Assistant Deputy Attorney-General with the BC Prosecution Service (Criminal Justice Branch, Ministry of Justice).

A regular contributor, author and presenter on public education and the legal profession, tireless volunteer, mentor, Queen's Counsel and community service award winner, Ms. DeWitt-Van Oosten is revered by colleagues as raising the bar in leading change in the profession and in the administration of justice. CBABC President Kerry Simmons commented, "We are extremely pleased to present our most prestigious award to such a deserving individual. M. Joyce DeWitt-Van Oosten, Q.C. demonstrates all the exceptional qualities which this Memorial Award signifies and celebrates."
