ProMutual Group's Richard W. Brewer Named Insurance Professional of the Year

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - October 19, 2009) - ProMutual Group President and CEO Richard W. Brewer was recently named The 2009 Insurance Professional of the Year by The Insurance Library Association of Boston. The award honors an individual who has demonstrated leadership and exemplifies those qualities that engender understanding of and respect for the insurance industry.

"It is a privilege to be recognized by The Insurance Library and to be named The Insurance Professional of the Year," said Brewer. "This award has been a marker of excellence in insurance for decades and I am honored to join the venerable ranks of past recipients."

Originally established by the Boston Board of Fire Underwriters, the prestigious Insurance Professional of the Year Award was presented at a ceremony on October 16, 2009, at The Boston Harbor Hotel. Although the award had a period of inactivity in the late 1980s, it continues to be a coveted honor under the current stewardship of The Insurance Library. Every year a formal selection committee meets to consider a nominated pool of competitive and successful insurance peers from across the property and casualty insurance sector. Past winners include distinguished legislators, heads of national insurance governing committees and executives from the country's leading insurance companies.

"With close to 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, Mr. Brewer has demonstrated the ability to direct large, complex insurance organizations and has earned a reputation within the industry for integrity and leadership," said Jean E. Lucey of The Insurance Library Association of Boston. "At the helm of ProMutual Group since 2001, he has made a significant impact not only in the company but in the medical liability industry as well."

Prior to joining ProMutual Group, Brewer was president and CEO of Arbella Mutual Insurance Company. He had served in this position since 1988 until joining ProMutual Group. Brewer started his insurance career as a claims representative and later was an underwriter before moving into various management positions. He has held executive positions with national carriers, such as Hartford Financial and National Grange Mutual.

Brewer is a member of the Massachusetts Insurance Federation. He is presently a member of the board of trustees of the American Institute for Economic Research in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and also serves on a number of other committees. Recently, Brewer was appointed to the Board of the Massachusetts Medical Malpractice Reinsurance Plan. Civically active, Mr. Brewer also received the Public Services Award in 1998 from Work, Inc. which recognizes recipients for assisting and supporting individuals with disabilities. Mr. Brewer is a graduate of Fairfield University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and received a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Bridgeport. He and his wife, Barbara, currently reside in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
