Proposed EU Legislation Would Permit the Use of ATDynamics' Maximum Efficiency TrailerTail Aerodynamic Device Throughout the European Union

New Legislation Proposed by the European Commission in April Will Support the Installation of Full-Length TrailerTails as a Retrofit to Existing Lorries; Pre-Orders Are Currently Available to European Trucking Fleets

HAYWARD, CA--(Marketwired - May 7, 2013) - ATDynamics, the leading global supplier of semi-trailer rear-drag aerodynamics technology, today announced that it supports the European Commission's recently proposed legislation to improve the aerodynamics of heavy duty vehicles. The legislation addresses both truck-cab and trailer aerodynamics with particular focus on permitting extended length tail devices designed to reduce drag and streamline airflow at the back of semi-trailers.

In a recent brief on the proposed legislation, Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for Transport, said, "A brick is the least aerodynamic shape you can imagine, that's why we need to improve the shape of the lorries on our roads. These changes make road transport cleaner and safer. They will reduce hauliers' fuel bills and give European manufacturers a head-start in designing the truck of the future, a greener truck for the global market."

"Once this legislation is approved, fleets in Europe will immediately have the opportunity to save six percent of their fuel costs with our full-length TrailerTail® technology, just as US fleets currently do," said Devin Koch, ATDynamics' VP of International Markets. "Aerodynamic improvements to the truck cab are not expected to be seen on the roads until 2018, however the part of the law allowing TrailerTails will have an immediate impact on transportation costs in Europe as soon as the member states approve it."

ATDynamics currently deploys TrailerTail rear-drag technology in Europe with a 50-centimeter device called TrailerTail Eco50 that is compliant with European regulation Directive 97/27/EC. The current legislation only permits devices up to 50 centimeters to be installed on new trailers produced in the European Union. The proposed legislation would allow the longer, more efficient 122-centimeter TrailerTail Eco120 to be installed on both new and existing trailers. ATDynamics is strongly encouraging European regulators to allow the full length TrailerTail, which it estimates will save EUR 50 billion in fuel costs and reduce transport carbon emissions by 90 million metric tons over the next decade.

Using a patented, origami folding design, TrailerTails collapse automatically when a driver opens the rear doors of a semi-trailer to access cargo and deploys with "one-touch" after a trailer is loaded and the doors are closed. The device can also be fully collapsed to eliminate additional vehicle length for regional deliveries and intermodal transport on rail cars. TrailerTails are made of flexible, lightweight thermoplastic composite materials and can be installed by two people in less than one hour.

TrailerTails provide additional safety benefits by improving vehicle stability in high winds, reducing spray in wet weather and creating a collapsible "crumple-zone" at the rear of trailers to reduce rear-impact collisions.

The current proposal must be adopted by the European Parliament and Member States before becoming law. For more information on the proposed legislation please visit:

More than 150 US trucking fleets have operated 15,000 TrailerTails more than 500 million kilometers on U.S. highways to date.
