The U.S. economy seems to be taking steps toward recovering from the worst recession since the 1930s in the second quarter as companies reduced inventories, started spending started and saw profits grow. A report today showed 570,000 workers filed claims for unemployment benefits last week, down from 580,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said in Washington.

AIG was up sharply in morning trading and climbed over the $50 mark at one point. AIG was up 28.5 percent at $48.40 at 12:30 in New York. In August's quiet trading, Bank of America, Citibank, Fannie and Freddie have accounting for an extraordinary amount of volume, which some traders have dubbed a "dash for trash". All of these stocks are showing gains today. Trading in Vonage Holdings Corp has slowed today with a share price drop as some investors take profits. Dell is trading about level with its earning report due later today.
