Protect Your Home From Theft This Holiday Season

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2011) - When we think of the holidays, the last thing on our minds is the possibility of our home being broken into, personal belongings stolen, and our holiday ruined. But unfortunately, at this time of year, it happens. In the home insurance business, the holiday season is one of the busiest for home burglary claims. The good news is: there are some basic things you can do to protect your home. Use these holiday home protection tips to keep your family and your belongings safe throughout the holiday season.

Holiday Home Protection Tips:

-- Never leave your purse or holiday gifts in plain sight of people who come to your door.

-- If hanging holiday lights outside of your home, never leave your ladder outside unattended for extended periods of time. This can protect your home from burglars who would use it to reach low roofs in order to access a window or balcony.

-- If you plan to travel during the holidays, whether on vacation or visiting friends, be sure to leave some interior lights on, or use timers. You can also protect your home by asking someone to shovel your snow and pickup your newspaper and mail. Advise your neighbors to watch your house.

-- Another way to reduce home burglary is by keeping your garage door opener out of sight. Thieves may steal the door opener from your car and use it to gain access to your home.

-- Protect your home by installing deadbolt locks with keys (with at least a 2.5 centimetre bolt) on all exterior doors and other entrances into the house from the garage or basement.

-- Be sure to keep your garage or shed locked. A garage can provide criminals with the tools and equipment to break and enter. Store your snow blower, gas barbecue, etc., out of sight when not in use.

-- Where possible, make sure doorways and windows are easily visible from the street. Never leave keys hidden near doors or under mats.

Stay safe this winter holiday by taking a few extra precautions to protect your home and reduce home burglary.
