Provena Health Benefits From McKesson Solutions

OPTYX and Horizon Radiology Systems Help Lower Costs and Improve Patient Care

ATLANTA, GA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 11, 2005 -- Provena Health, a six-hospital Catholic health system based in Mokena, Ill., recently selected solutions from McKesson to help lower costs and improve patient care. Provena Health will implement Horizon Radiology™, an integrated radiology information system and picture archiving and communication system (RIS/PACS), to reduce film expenses and make medical images and information available electronically for faster time to treatment. In addition, the health system will use McKesson's Web-based OPTYX(SM) technology to improve the integrity of medical supply data, help analyze purchasing expenses and drive cost-reduction initiatives.

"Our vision is to deliver the highest-quality patient care in the most cost-effective manner. We are confident that these solutions from McKesson will help us to realize that vision by both improving our clinical efficiency and reducing our costs," said Jonathan L. Manis, system vice president for Administrative Services and chief information officer for Provena Health. "We continue to find value in the wide variety of solutions that McKesson can provide to meet our needs in diverse areas of our health system, and we are especially impressed with the solutions McKesson will provide in support of our enhanced imaging and supply chain management initiatives."

Because supply costs are among the highest expenses for a hospital, Provena expects to realize significant bottom-line savings using McKesson's OPTYX technology. OPTYX is the first healthcare data management solution to compensate for the lack of industry standards for describing medical-surgical supplies. By cleansing and normalizing Provena's medical supply data, OPTYX will enable the multi-hospital system to have full and accurate visibility of its spending, resulting in improved business analytics.

"We have been extremely impressed with the OPTYX application," said Len Schmidt, system director of Supply Chain for Provena. "By using OPTYX to reduce our total medical-surgical product expense and increase our supply chain efficiency -- along with a host of other cost reduction, containment and management efforts -- we expect to generate dollars that we can reallocate toward investments in advanced clinical IT support systems."

One of those investments is Horizon Radiology, an integrated RIS/PACS solution that combines reporting and scheduling with anytime, anywhere access to the complete patient record for faster, more informed clinical decision-making. In addition, Horizon Radiology is designed to decrease Provena Health's operational costs by significantly reducing the use of paper and film and improving departmental workflow and productivity.

"McKesson's PACS solution will help us to dramatically improve imaging processes across our system through enhanced digital image acquisition, storage, retrieval, distribution and display," said Manis. "The solution will reduce the time required to access images and related information, leading to greater efficiency, reduced costs and, most importantly, higher-quality patient care."

"We are pleased that we were able to bring together McKesson assets to deliver value and cost-savings to Provena Health," said Robert McNeill, group president, One McKesson. "These projects are good examples of Provena's desire to implement the latest technology to support both its physician community and its organizational goals of enhanced patient safety and improved clinical quality. As the world's leading healthcare services organization, McKesson understands the complex challenges healthcare executives face today. With our breadth and depth, we are able to collaborate with our customers to address their specific requirements with solutions that address all areas of healthcare."
