Providence Engineering and Environmental Group Depends on Riverbed to Improve Worker Efficiency

Steelhead Appliances Accelerate Access to File Servers, Significantly Reduce Travel Expenses

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 20, 2010) -  Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced that Providence Engineering and Environmental Group LLC, a multi-media engineering and environmental consulting company, has deployed Riverbed® Steelhead® appliances in Louisiana and Texas. As a result of its Riverbed deployment, Providence was able to consolidate servers at branch offices while also accelerating access to business-critical applications, resulting in greater employee collaboration and improved productivity.

"We didn't have any budget set aside for wide area network (WAN) optimization, but once we began the trial the boost in productivity made us realize Steelhead appliances were a must have. It was easy to demonstrate to our executives that we would quickly be able to recoup our investment," said Wesley Corie, network administrator at Providence. "From any of our branch offices, employees felt like they had on-the-spot access to data that was oftentimes in a different state. To our company, Riverbed is one of the rare magical fixes that work!"

Since its founding in 2000, Providence has grown to over 140 employees with offices and staff in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The company provides air and water quality, ecological and waste management, engineering and environmental consulting services to clients throughout the world. Employees located in different offices frequently work together on the same projects and there is a lot of network traffic due to files being passed back and forth between office locations. Before its Riverbed deployment, the distance between Providence offices slowed down performance of key applications, including Auto Desk AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and email. In addition, the company's proprietary and data-heavy greenhouse gas and other emissions compliance tools, Active Intelligence Monitoring (AIM) software suite, consumed a lot of WAN bandwidth, which also slowed performance for remote users. These performance issues were often so severe that engineers extended their day by as much as an hour while waiting to access business-critical applications.

Mr. Corie understood that adding bandwidth would not completely resolve these issues, and turned to WAN optimization instead. He considered offerings from several vendors, including Cisco and Riverbed. After conducting a short real-world trial of the Riverbed solution, the IT and executive team at Providence were impressed by the accelerated application performance and improvements in employee productivity. The company selected the Riverbed WAN optimization solution as it was the most cost-effective, easiest to integrate and required no changes to existing infrastructure.

Due to the improvement in performance, engineers are now more productive, with immediate access to critical business applications such as documents, e-mail and GIS (geographic information systems) maps. Now, 15 engineers are able to gain an hour in productivity per day. The outcome for Providence is happier employees.
